Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)
Ear Pinning in Sugar Land, Katy, and Houston, Texas
A patient’s ears are the focal point for anatomic symmetry of their face, and if the ears are deformed it can result in significant anxiety. Having a surgery to intervene can increase self-esteem and alleviate the associated unease. An otoplasty is a facial rejuvenation surgical procedure that will address the cosmetic ear deformity and create a more naturally appearing ear. Ear surgery can correct ears that protrude from the head and alter the size or position of the ear. Procedure may be performed in adults and children over the age of 6.
If you have overly large ears or protruding ears, you may benefit from otoplasty to create more aesthetically pleasing ears.
Benefits to undergoing an otoplasty include:
- Creating a more symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
- Alleviating the emotional stress and anxiety associated with this defect.

Make sure to speak to your surgeon regarding any questions or concerns you may have during this consultation process.
Ear Pinning Procedure Description
Otoplasty is usually performed in our certified surgery center under general anesthesia and patients go home the same day. Surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours. There are a few different types of procedures performed based on patient presentation and physician preference. However, the commonality between all the procedures is that the incisions are made behind each ear and then the reshaping of the ear begins. Shaping may include removing part of the cartilage of the ear to allow for a more aesthetic look and/or folding and stitching the cartilage. Your surgeon will determine which procedure will offer you the best results. Incisions behind the ear are usually closed with absorbable sutures and compressive dressings are applied.
Ear Pinning Recovery
You will be scheduled for a follow up with your surgeon. Because the incisions are located behind the ears, the scars are well hidden. There will be swelling after the surgery which will diminish over the next couple of weeks. Pain is minimal and is well controlled by oral pain medications prescribed by your doctor. You will be asked to wear a compressive head band. One week after surgery most patients are able to return to their normal activities.
Ear Pinning Results
The results allow for a more symmetrical facial appearance, thus, alleviating the years of emotional stress and anxiety that is so commonly associated with this type of defect. Otoplasty results are usually permanent and patients are very pleased with their outcomes.
