WHAT CAN IT DO? Reduces size of male breasts
COMBINE WITH: Liposuction
Men who suffer from enlarged breasts may elect to have male breast reduction surgery to tighten and define their pectoral region.
Gynecomastia is a medical condition that is commonly known as “male breasts” and can be a very embarrassing condition affecting men of all ages, in which the breast tissue becomes overdeveloped and excess fatty tissue accumulates in the pectoral area, along with increased breast gland development, affect one or both breasts. Gynecomastia may be caused by hormonal imbalances, obesity, medications, or heredity. In many cases, the condition is purely cosmetic; however, it is essential that, with any medical diagnosis, the patient’s condition be properly evaluated to rule out any type of root cause prior to undergoing elective surgical intervention.
Men and teen boys may choose to undergo Gynecomastia surgery to reduce the breast size, by removing excess breast tissue and creating a more contoured chest. In cases that affect the nipple, reconstructive surgery of the nipple may also be clinically indicated. Our gynecomastia surgery patients report that the procedure has helped them regain their self-confidence by eliminating the embarrassment of unsightly excess breast tissue.
Gynecomastia Consultation and Planning
Once you have decided to pursue surgery to address gynecomastia, it is important to speak with the surgeon of your choice to determine the next steps in the intervention process. At your initial consultation with the plastic surgeon in Sugar Land you will learn about the risks, benefits, and possible complications that may result from this surgery. Your surgeon will assess your medical condition and ask you about your expectations regarding this intervention. As with any cosmetic surgery, there are no perfect results and you must maintain realistic expectations regarding the intervention. Routine lab work, cessation of smoking, and cessation of anti-inflammatory medications and aspirin will be required prior to the surgery. Your surgeon will examine your breast tissue and discuss which options will be most appropriate for your case.
Male Breast Reduction Procedure
There are different techniques available for treating gynecomastia. Your surgeon will discuss your different options and together you will determine which will provide the best possible outcome for you. In many cases, if the gynecomastia is a result of increased fat build-up, your surgeon may recommend liposuction to remove the excess fatty tissue. Liposuction is a procedure that extracts fatty tissue through a small incision site. This treatment is indicated only when patients have fatty deposits in their breasts with very little glandular tissue or excess skin.
Another option is surgical removal of glandular tissue and excess skin. Excision of the excess glandular tissue and excess skin is done through a well-hidden incision under the nipple and areola. In some cases, it may be necessary to reposition the nipple in order to create a more normal anatomic chest. The incision sites and their locations will vary depending on the requirements of the surgery; so that will be an essential question to ask your surgeon prior to intervention.
In cases of extreme gynecomastia, your surgeon may recommend a combination of both liposuction and excision removal of glandular tissue and excess skin.
Male Breast Reduction Recovery
Following gynecomastia surgery, the recovery process begins and you will have close follow up with your surgeon. You will be required to wear a surgical compression garment or bandages to diminish swelling. Your surgeon may also place drains to allow for successful drainage of blood or fluid. We will provide detailed post-operative instructions and prescribe medications to control any pain or discomfort. Most patients are able to return to work in a few days, but we recommend that you do not do any lifting heavier than a gallon of milk, as well as no strenuous physical activity for at least 2 weeks. Exercise, including weight training, may be resumed after 4 to 6 weeks.
Male Breast Reduction Results
The results will be immediately visible; however, there will be swelling that will continue to resolve over time. The scars will also diminish over time. It may take as long as 3 to 6 months before you can appreciate the final results of your surgical intervention. The results are considered permanent; however, if your case of gynecomastia was induced by medication or weight gain, and these practices continue, then the problem of gynecomastia may recur. For this reason, it is imperative that you maintain realistic goals and expectations, and avoid medications that may cause recurrence if possible.
